False Headlines

During the trial, dozens of sensationalist stories were featured in national newspapers. On the surface, these misleading headlines made Jemma’s story seem completely implausible. These stories were either taken completely out of context or were falsified in order to make the headlines as extreme as possible.

The two most disturbing “facts” promoted by the papers claimed that Jemma claimed she was raped by 15 separate men on 15 separate occasions. These headlines were completely false and written out of context, originating from a misleading quote from the prosecution opening statement.

The court found that Jemma was found guilty of wrongly accusing three men, on four occasions over a three year period, which would have made for far less appealing headlines. In fact, a Mumsnet survey suggests 23% of women have experienced rape or sexual assault 4 or more times.
